Guided Tour of the Alcazaba
Explore Almeria's most important monument and the largest Arab citadel in Spain. Discover the secrets lurking deep in the walls of the 10th century fortress as you experience the historic Alcazaba.
Itinerary
Meet your guide at the indicated time on Almanzor street, outside the city's iconic historical heritage site, the Alcazaba. The biggest Arab citadel in Spain, construction of the immense fortress began in the 10th century, and it was taken over and updated by the Catholic Monarchs after the Reconquista.
We'll admire the remains of the Jayran Walls that lead up to the Arab complex. Inside the Alcazaba, you'll explore its three different walled enclosures while your expert guide's fascinating explanations take you back in time to the era of Islamic Andalusia.
Strolling through the gardens of the first enclosure, you'll reach the Muro de la Vela, or 'Wall of the Sail', which historically housed an enormous bell that would alert the population to important or threatening events in Almeria. The second enclosure is home to the Odalisque's viewpoint, from which you can enjoy magnificent views over the city and the port.
You'll finish your tour in the third enclosure, the most modern part of the Alcazaba. Here you'll see the keep, which has featured in the filming of Game of Thrones, and the Powder Tower, where the fortress' supply of gunpowder would be kept.
As you walk back to Plaza de la Constitución, you'll make a brief stop at the Cathedral of Almeria to admire the impressive architecture of the fortress-church.
