Discover historic cave paintings and ancient archaeological remains with this tour of the Cueva de las Maravillas National Park and explore the scenic village of Altos de Chavón.
Cueva de las Maravillas & Altos de Chavón Tour
After we pick you up from your hotel at the scheduled time, we'll head to the Cueva de las Maravillas National Park.
Upon arrival, we'll visit a museum to see its exhibitions of archaeological artifacts from different periods found inside the cave. Afterwards, we'll enter the Cueva de las Maravillas, or Cave of Wonders, which stretches 800 meters (2,624 ft) long and 25 meters (82 ft) deep. The caves are home to centipedes, lizards, and up to three types of bats. But, without a doubt, the most striking feature of this place is the Taino paintings, which are around 800 years old!
On the way out of the cave, we'll visit a center dedicated to rhinoceros iguanas, a species in danger of extinction. Did you know that these animals can grow up to almost 2 meters long?
We'll then head to Altos de Chavón, a traditional Mediterranean village built on a hill overlooking the Chavón River. We'll take a stroll through this special place while we get to know its main highlights, including an amphitheater.
Next, we'll enjoy a delicious lunch at the Bibelenke Restaurant and Piano Bar in La Romana. Here, you'll enjoy typical dishes such as chicken bandera, sancocho soup, moro de guandules with coconut, and fried fish rounds.
After eating, we'll make our way to an artisanal shop to taste some coffee and mamajuana. In addition, we'll also check out a cigar exhibition. From there, we'll make our way to the starting point. We're expected to arrive back at the hotel after around 9 hours together.
