Guatavita & Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá Tour

At the scheduled time, we’ll pick you up from your hotel and, from there, head north out of Bogotá. After a journey of between 2 and 2.5 hours, we’ll arrive at the beautiful town of Guatavita.

We'll set off on a 20 to 30-minute route that'll take us around this charming town, which is home to the beautiful Guatavita Lagoon. Here, we'll go on a 2-hour walk with a Spanish-speaking guide. This natural oasis is said to have been where Indigenous Peoples made offerings in honor of Chie, the goddess of water. This is also one of the places related to the popular legend of El Dorado!

After the visit to the lake, we'll spend 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes travelling northwest to the town of Zipaquirá. When we get there, you'll have 1 hour free to eat some lunch.

Once we've reconvened, you'll have 2 hours free to visit the famous Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá with an audio guide in English. This impressive church is located 590 feet (180 meters) deep in the area's salt mines, exploited since the year 1801 by the local residents.

At the end of the visit, we’ll get back on the vehicle and begin the return journey to the starting point. We’ll arrive back in Bogotá after a journey of between 1.5 and 2 hours.

Tour Options

When booking, you can choose between two options:

Tour without tickets: this activity includes an English-speaking driver during transfers. In this case, please note that you'll have to purchase tickets on your own in order to participate in the activity.
Tour with tickets: by booking this option, in addition to the above, you'll have admission to the Guatavita Lagoon included along with an English-speaking guide during the 2-hour walk around the lagoon, as well as admission to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá. However, the visit inside the Cathedral will only be with an audio guide in English.

Schedule & Pickup Points

The day trip includes pickup from hotels in Bogotá located in the areas of Candelaria, Chapinero, and Parque de la 93. Hotel pickup will take place approximately between 6:45 am and 7:55 am.

If you are not staying in these areas, you must go at the indicated times to the following meeting points in Bogotá:

In front of the Juan Valdez café in the La Candelaria neighborhood at 7 am
Near Parque de la 93 at 8 am

Important: times may vary depending on traffic or other circumstances.

Separate Excursions

If you don't have enough time to do both activities on the same day or you're only interested in one in particular, you can book the excursion to Guatavita or the excursion to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá separately. The choice is yours!
