Eva Perón, an Argentine Icon
María Eva Duarte de Perón, known as Evita, was born on May 7, 1919, in Los Toldos, in the province of Buenos Aires.
As a young woman, she pursued a career as an actress until 1944, when she met General Juan Domingo Perón, whom she would later marry. When the general won the 1946 elections, Evita became First Lady of the Argentine Republic.
Throughout her life, Eva Perón was a passionate advocate for workers' rights and the poor. She also championed women's suffrage, which was approved in Argentina in 1947.
Another of her great achievements was the creation of the Eva Perón Foundation, which funded the construction of hospitals and schools and provided aid to those in need.
Eva Perón died in 1952 at just 33 years old, but her legacy lives on to this day.
