After we pick you up from your hotel in Calama, we'll kick off our tour through Ollagüe and the Alto del Loa Salt Flats. A unique natural landscape awaits us in this area of northern Chile!
From Calama, we'll take on a 190-kilometer (118-mile) car ride with stunning views of the San Pedro, San Pablo, and Ollagüe volcanoes. As we arrive at the Ascotán salt flat, we'll marvel at the large size of the gypsum and halite in front of us. Additionally, this landscape comprises lagoons fed by salt flats during the rainy seasons. We'll share many more curiosities during our visit to the site!
A short distance away and separated by volcanoes like Ollagüe and Aucanquincha, we'll come across the Carcote Salt Flat. Today, you can still find small lakes near the banks of the salt flat, the highlight of which is Laguna Verde.
At about 2:30 pm, we'll visit the former sugar refinery of Buenaventura. This space played an important role in the town's flourishing economy, thanks to the geographic location of the salt flats.
Before returning to Calama, we'll pause for a moment in Ollagüe so you can enjoy lunch at any of the local restaurants nearby. This rural village, founded in 1979 and located in the highlands of Loa, sits 3,660 meters (12,007 feet) above sea level, making it a unique place in the Antofagasta region!
Lastly, we'll make our way back to your hotel, arriving between 10 and 11 hours after pickup.
