Alternative Copenhagen Tour

A red light district, a hipster neighbourhood... and even a hippie mini-state on the margins of the European Union. Get to know the other face of Copenhagen on this alternative tour of the city.

Alternative Copenhagen Tour Itinerary

We'll begin our alternative Copenhague tour in Vesterbrogade street, next to the Town Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen), and over two and a half hours you'll discover the major seats of the countercultural and underground movements of the Danish capital.

Our first stop will be in Vesterbro, the hippest neighbourhood in Copenhagen. Vintage clothes shops, restaurants boasting avant-garde design, and large street art murals have popularised the area in recent years. And as well as getting to know the modern atmosphere of this area of the city will discover the history of its most significant monuments: the New Det Ny Theatre and the Eliaskirken church

Inside the Vesterbro we'll pass through Istedgade street and its surroundings, an area known as Copenhagen's red light district for its sex shops and tradition of liberalism. And just around the corner, you can find the Kødbyen district, popular among Copenhagen's young people for its wealth of spots to eat and drink.

The tour will end around the "Freetown Christiania" area. This leafy part of the Christianshavn neighbourhood is home to 1,000 residents who consider themselves "at the margin of the laws of the European Union." Its origins come in the hippie movement, and this free city has had some problems with problems with the authorities regarding the sale of cannabis, yet has become one of the most visited hippie communes in Europe.

Important Information

When ending the tour we will give you various recommendations so you can visit Freetown Christiana on your own. Although the area is certainly not dangerous, the community there lives by strict rules: it is prohibited both to take photos and videos, and to speak on your mobile phone inside the Christiana area.

Student Rates

If you reserve the student ticket, before beginning the tour you must show the guide an international student card, a card from your university or accredited student centre.
