Jerez Alcazar & Cathedral Guided Tour Itinerary

After meeting your guide at 11 am in Plaza del Arenal, Jerez de la Frontera's beautiful main square, you'll begin your two-hour walking tour around the city's most important and representative historic buildings and monuments.

We'll begin by strolling through Alameda Vieja Park, after which we'll arrive at the imposing Alcazar of Jerez. This building is one of the very few examples in Spain of architecture from the 12th century Almohad Caliphate. The former Moorish palace-fortress is the oldest monument in the city.

To access the Alcazar complex, you'll enter via the Puerta de la Ciudad, or the "Gate of the City". Admire the magnificent architecture of the buildings, including the only remaining of eighteen mosques that the city used to have, which was turned into a church after the Christian conquest of Jerez.

After visiting the mosque, which is today the chapel of Santa María la Real, we'll walk around the Patio de Armas and the gardens. We'll also visit the cistern, the Arab baths, the pharmacy and even the Villavicencio Palace, a beautiful Baroque palace built on the ruins of a former Islamic palace.

Leaving the Alcazar behind, you'll make your way to Plaza Encarnación, where the 17th century Cathedral of Jerez de la Frontera stands. Along the way, you'll see the monument to Tio Pepe, honouring the founder of the famous sherry bodegas.

Reaching the cathedral, you'll be captivated by the stunning mix of architectural styles, from Gothic to Baroque to Neoclassical. Inside, you'll visit the cathedral museum, the chapels of the Immaculate Conception, the Tabernacle and the Chapels of the Souls. We'll also admire the most famous painting found inside, La Virgen Niña en oración by Francisco de Zurbarán.

Once we've finished our visit to the Alcázar and Cathedral of Jerez, we'll go to the Plaza de la Asunción. Here, we'll find a neoclassical palace, the old municipal library and the Church of San Dionisio, a Gothic-Mudejar style temple which dates back to the 15th century.

Your guided tour of historic Jerez de la Frontera will come to an end at 1 pm in the Plaza de la Asunción..
