The Jewish Shabbat introduced the world to the idea of the weekend - learn all about the origins, history and curiosities of the holy day on this walking tour of Jerusalem's historic centre.
Shabbat Experience Walking Tour
At 5 pm we'll meet at the Jaffa Gate to discover the meaning of Shabbat for the Jews. This holy day begins at sunset on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday. Torah reading, rest and prayer are some of the most widespread practices every Sabbath.
We'll walk through the centre of the Old City of Jerusalem to the Hurva synagogue, a temple built by the Sephardic Jews who came from Spain and other European countries. There we'll learn about what happened after the devastating fire at the hands of the Arabs.
Then we'll walk through the Jewish quarter to the Four Sephardic Synagogues, Eliahu Ha-Nav, Yochanan Ben-Zakai, Istanbul and Kahal Tsion. We'll talk about each of them and look closely at their ornamentation.
This Shabbat tour wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Western Wall, our next stop. The significance of this place comes from the lament of the Jewish people over the destruction of their holy area. You can't leave without inserting a wish into one of the shadows. Can you imagine it being fulfilled?
At 7 pm we'll return to the starting point to conclude the activity.
