Tropaeum Alpium Tickets
Why Visit the Tropaeum Alpium?
Erected in the year 6 BC in honor of Octavian, Julius Caesar's nephew and Rome's first emperor, the Tropaeum Alpium is a memorial celebrating the surrender of the Alpine tribes to the Roman Empire.
With your ticket to the Tropaeum Alpium, also known as the Trophy of the Alps, you can see the Latin inscriptions on this monument, located in La Turbie. This town lies right on the border between the ancient Roman provinces of Gaul and Italy, so the location of this massive commemorative landmark is no coincidence.
Monuments of this type were typically dedicated to the deities of victory. What makes the Tropaeum Alpium unique is that it is part of a sanctuary dedicated to Heracles Monoikos, from whom the name Monaco derives. This way, Augustus is elevated to the status of Heracles-Hercules, a demigod promised immortality after completing his twelve labors.
The Trophy of Augustus is located at the highest point of the ancient Via Julia Augusta, a Roman road that connected the present-day French Riviera with the Ligurian coast in modern-day Italy.
If you climb up to the Tropaeum Alpium viewpoint, you'll enjoy extraordinary panoramic views of the French Riviera, the Principality of Monaco, and the Italian coastline. You'll be able to see three countries from just one vantage point!
