Babaçu Indigenous Village Visit
Activity Details
Are you familiar with the customs of the Terena people? This indigenous community lives mainly in the Pantanal of Miranda, a vast natural area that extends across the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. To learn how its inhabitants live, we’ll meet at the Centro Comunitário Aldeia Babaçu.
We’ll begin our guided visit to the Babaçu village with an introduction to the history of the Terena people. Next, we’ll take a simple walk through the community lasting approximately 1 hour. During the route, we’ll discover various medicinal plants used for healing, rituals, and other purposes. Afterwards, we’ll taste seasonal native fruits collected directly from nature.
We’ll continue the tour of Babaçu by visiting the artisans’ area, where the women of the village create ceramics, basketry, and other traditional products. Here, you’ll have approximately 30 minutes to observe the creation process, talk with the artisans, and purchase original pieces directly from the community, helping support local development.
Next, we’ll head to another part of the village, where we’ll hear stories about Terena ancestry, language, customs, and spirituality. You’ll surely be surprised!
Finally, we’ll open a Q&A session to answer any questions and walk back to the meeting point, where we’ll conclude this activity after a total of 2 hours.
