Jalatlaco Neighborhood Free Walking Tour
See Street Art in Jalatlaco, Oaxaca's Magical Neighborhood
We'll meet at the Once In Oaxaca café, next to the San Matías Jalatlaco church, to begin a free walking tour of one of Oaxaca's most colorful and historic neighborhoods. Are you ready to discover why Jalatlaco was declared a Magical Neighborhood?
We'll start walking along its characteristic cobblestone streets, where pre-Columbian times, colonial heritage, and contemporary art converge in an explosion of color. Accompanied by a guide who is also an artist, we'll dive into the history of this neighborhood, which has managed to preserve its essence despite the passage of centuries.
Did you know that its proximity to the General Pantheon directly influences its aesthetic? We'll stop to admire the impressive murals adorning the facades, whose themes mostly revolve around the traditions of the Day of the Dead. We'll learn to interpret these works and discover the importance of urban art as a cultural driving force in the area.
Our tour will also take us to various local art workshops and galleries. There, we'll discover techniques as varied as printmaking, painting, and the political prints that give Oaxaca so much character. You'll also have the opportunity to see firsthand the work of the artists who keep the creative flame of the neighborhood alive.
A stop in front of the Jalatlaco church and its trees, some over 360 years old, silent guardians of local history, is a must. While enjoying the bohemian atmosphere, we'll give you the best recommendations for cafés and culinary gems so you can experience the neighborhood like a true Oaxacan after the tour.
After a 2-hour tour, we'll finish the free walking tour in the heart of Jalatlaco.
