Oviedo Free Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at the Monument to Alfonso II de Asturias in the Calle del Águila, in the heart of the city, to begin our free walking tour of Oviedo.
First, we'll stroll through the medieval streets of the city, discovering its past and present, and meeting a few characters along the way. You'll see the Cathedral of San Salvador, a major landmark and place of pilgrimage on the famous Camino de Santiago. Built in the flamboyant Gothic style, it also features a blend of pre-Romanesque and Baroque elements.
We'll then visit the Plaza de Trascorrales, one of the most charming squares in the historic center. This square is dominated by the Mercado El Fontán, an elegant building dating back to the 19th century. Today, it's a cultural center. A few steps away is the Town Hall, the Plaza del Fontán, a square surrounded by houses with arcades and colorful wooden balconies. Here, you'll learn about the importance of Oviedo as a market town.
Next, we'll head to the University of Oviedo, with over 400 years of history! This historic building, with its classic 16th-century architecture, also has a magnificent cloister.
Finally, we'll discover the Plaza de la Escandalera, which marks the boundary between the old historic center and the more modern part of the city. Did you know it's nicknamed the square with 100 names? Then, we'll visit the Teatro Campoamor with its beautiful Neoclassical facade and the Iglesia de San Juan el Real, known for its spiritual and architectural significance.
After 2.5 hours, we'll end our free walking tour back at the starting point.
