Delve into Potsdam's Soviet past on this fascinating tour. This small city became an important base of power for the USSR in post-war East Germany, and on this tour, you'll learn more about its history and visit key places such as the Bridge of Spies and the Cecilienhof Palace.
Soviet Tour of Potsdam
Our tour starts in the Central Station of Potsdam, where our English speaking expert guide will be waiting for you. From there, we will head to Cecilienhof Palace, an English style building with a Soviet red star in its courtyard garden.
You will hear all about how, in this building located in the New Garden, the Potsdam Declaration was signed in July 1945. At this meeting, leaders from the USSR, the USA, and the UK debated the terms of the Japanese surrender.
On the route to the palace, we will visit landmarks to Potsdam's historical past, such as the Old Market square, and the Soviet War Memorial. And we'll make stops at important locations which help us to understand the history of Potsdam, such as the old command center of the KGB - the Soviet intelligence agency.
The last stop on our itinerary is the iconic Glienicke Bridge, popularly known as the Bridge of Spies. Due to its location at what was once the border of East and West Germany, it was often used as a meeting point to exchange captured secret agents. Movie lovers will recognize this location from the Steven Spielberg film 'Bridge of Spies'.
The tour finishes here, so you can spend as long as you want taking photos of this famous location. You may also want to revisit some of the places we saw on the itinerary.
