Free Walking Tour of Quito
Discover Quito's historic centre and learn the secrets of its cultural heritage on this guided walking tour of the Ecuadorian capital.
Free Walking Tour of Quito
The tour meets at the Parque de la Alameda, at 9 am. Did you know that for centuries, this park marked the northern boundary of the city? From there, we'll begin travelling through 15 centuries of a city built in the image of the constellation of the sacred jaguar.
To begin our tour, we'll stroll around the beautiful historic centre, and learn about the most important monuments in the Ecuadorian capital, which unites the Northern and Southern hemispheres. We'll come to the Basilica of the National Vow and explore the inside so we can discover its history, curiosities and legends. In addition, we'll admire the Pichincha volcano, which rises 4,784 metres above sea level. Its most recent eruption in 1999 covered Quito's sky for two full weeks.
Our free walking tour of Quito will continue to the Plaza Grande, also called the Plaza de la Independencia, where we'll see what everyday life is like for Quito's residents. We'll also take a look at some of the buildings that line the square, such as Carondelet Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito and the Metropolitan Cultural Centre.
Next, we'll visit the Church of the Society of Jesus, which is completely covered with gold on the inside. When we get to the Sucre House, we'll also get to see what a house from the colonial era looked like. We'll then visit the Church of San Francisco de Quito, which is the largest building in the historic centre.
Before we finish our tour we'll pass by the Arco de la Reina, which marks the southern end of the ancient city. Our last stop will be at the Plaza de Santo Domingo, also known as Plaza Sucre, and the site of the Arco de Santo Domingo.
Having spent 3 hours exploring Quito, our free walking tour will come to an end.
