South Coast Tour: Glaciers & Waterfalls

  • 88 reviews | 1,208 travellers
The excursion was very beautiful and the guide was wonderful. 100% recommended. Only Skogafoss disappointed me; the time they gave us to see the waterfall was just a rush to take four photos and rush back. It was a disappointment because I would have liked to have five minutes to look at it and enjoy how beautiful it is. Then they stopped us for 45 minutes to look at shops. However, I was compensated for by seeing the Northern Lights on the way back. The guide made us stop twice so we could see them, and I was so happy to see them.

South Coast Tour: Glaciers & Waterfalls

We'll leave Reykjavík in the morning to cross the vast plains of Skógasandur and Mýrdalssandur. During the journey, weather permitting, we'll see famous volcanoes such as Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull, as well as the Langjökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers.

Our first stop will be Skógafoss waterfall. With a 196 ft (60-meter) drop, this setting was used as a filming location for Thor: The Dark World. It is also the starting point of the famous Fimmvörðuháls route. After visiting it, we'll stop at Freysnes, where you'll have free time to have lunch on your own next to the National Park.

After lunch, we'll arrive at the highlight: the Jökulsárlón glacier. This 6.94-square-meter (18-square-kilometer) lake is a spectacle of ancient icebergs that break off from Vatnajökull. Does the landscape look familiar? It has appeared in Batman Begins and James Bond!

A few steps away is Diamond Beach, where fragments of ice wash up on the black sand, sparkling like diamonds. After exploring this spot, we'll begin our return journey with a stop in the picturesque village of Vík í Mýrdal. What do you think of the impressive Reynisdrangar rock formations in the sea?

The last gem of the day will be Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Originating from the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, it is famous because you can walk behind its curtain of water. We recommend wearing a raincoat if you don't want to get wet!

Finally, we'll return to the starting point and say our goodbyes after 14 hours.

Meeting Points
