More information

Set atop Capitoline Hill, the Capitoline Museums are the world’s oldest public museums and one of Rome’s most important cultural institutions. They house a vast collection of ancient art that traces the city’s history from antiquity onward.

Background and history

Founded in 1471 when Pope Sixtus IV donated a group of bronze statues to the people of Rome, the museums later expanded into a complex of palaces designed around Michelangelo’s Capitoline Square. The collections include Roman sculptures, inscriptions and Renaissance artworks, all displayed within historic buildings that once symbolized civic power.

Why visit

The Capitoline Museums offer a deep look into Rome’s past. Highlights include the Capitoline Wolf, the colossal statue of Constantine, and classical busts that shaped Western art. The museums also feature terraces with views over the Roman Forum, adding context to the artworks inside.
