Tour Details

At the designated time, your driver-guide will pick you up from your Tokyo hotel for a comfortable 1-hour drive to Kamakura, as the city gradually gives way to lush greenery and coastal scenery.

During this day trip, you'll be able to completely customize your itinerary... the world (or Kamakura, at least) is your oyster! Below is a sample itinerary that we can follow if you choose:

Our first recommended stop is Engaku-ji Temple, one of Kamakura's most important Zen temples, set amid a tranquil forest. It's a serene introduction to the area's deep spiritual heritage. We can then continue to Kencho-ji, the oldest Zen monastery in Japan, where vast temple grounds, an impressive main gate, and peaceful gardens create a truly contemplative atmosphere.

Next, we'll visit Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kamakura's most prominent Shinto shrine, dedicated to the god of war and protection. Sitting majestically at the end of Wakamiya-oji Street, it has a rich connection to Japan's samurai history, and the views from its steps are well worth the climb.

You shouldn't miss a stroll through Komachi-dori, a charming street lined with local boutiques, craft shops, and food stalls... the perfect spot to try traditional Kamakura treats like sweet potato soft serve, rice crackers, or matcha desserts and browse for unique souvenirs. This is also the perfect place to grab some lunch if you wish, and try the delicious local cuisine.

In the afternoon, we can make a stop at Kamakura's most iconic landmark: the Great Buddha of Kotoku-in. Standing over 13 meters (43 feet) tall, this bronze statue has watched over the city since the 13th century. You can even step inside for a closer look at its remarkable craftsmanship.

Just a short drive away, Hase-dera Temple is home to a magnificent eleven-headed statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, and a terrace with sweeping views over Kamakura and the coastline below.

We can round off the day with a relaxing stop at Yuigahama Beach, where you can feel the sea breeze, walk along the shore, or enjoy a coffee at a seaside café before heading back to Tokyo, arriving at your hotel 8 hours after setting off.
