On this night tour of the Glowworm Cave, you'll explore an ancient volcanic landscape where bioluminescent organisms create a luminous spectacle that will leave you breathless.
Night Tour Details
We'll meet at Wintergarden Café at the designated time, where we'll begin our adventure to discover bioluminescent organisms right in the heart of Auckland.
In less than 10 minutes on foot, we'll enter the volcanic landscape of the Domain, one of Auckland's largest and oldest parks. As we stroll through its trails, you'll be captivated by the subtropical flora surrounding us. The nīkau palm trees, which are unique to New Zealand, and the relaxing sound of the small waterfalls create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.
As the night falls, we'll experience the most anticipated moment of the tour. In the darkness, luminous bugs will start to shine with their characteristic blueish light, magically illuminating the environment. As we walk, we'll tell you all about these fascinating creatures, that aren't really worms but instead the larval stage of a fungus gnat. Did you know they use their light to attract their prey? Amazing!
During the tour, you'll learn how these tiny organisms produce their bioluminescence through a natural chemical reaction—a unique phenomenon found in only a few species worldwide, making glow worms the true stars of the night.
Finally, after experiencing this natural light spectacle, we'll return to the meeting point and say our goodbyes after 1 hour.
