Bilbao Guggenheim Museum Guided Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet in front of the museum's iconic titanium facade, one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. Designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 1997, the structure is itself a work of art: 33,000 thin titanium panels that shift in color depending on the light, draped over a curving steel skeleton so complex that Gehry had to use aerospace software to bring his vision to life.
Before we even step inside, we'll take in the sculptural landmarks that greet visitors at the entrance, including Jeff Koons' Puppy, a 12-meter (40-foot) West Highland Terrier blanketed in fresh flowers, and Louise Bourgeois' Maman, a monumental bronze spider that pays tribute to the artist's mother.
Inside, our guide will lead us through the permanent collection and any current temporary exhibitions, putting each work in its artistic and cultural context. The collection spans key movements of the second half of the 20th century and beyond, with works by Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, Yves Klein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cy Twombly, and many others.
One of the undisputed highlights is Richard Serra's The Matter of Time, a series of massive curved steel sculptures that fill an entire gallery and create a truly immersive walking experience unlike anything else in contemporary art.
Throughout the 1.5-hour tour, your guide will share the stories, curiosities, and cultural context behind the works, making modern and contemporary art accessible and engaging for all levels of familiarity with the subject.
