Discover what life was like in Bolivia over three thousand years ago when you take this fantastic trip to Tiwanaku. Our professional guide will show you around one of the most important archaeological sites in South America.
Half-Day Excursion (5 hours)
In the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel in La Paz before beginning our trip to Tiwanaku, where you will travel back in time to the year 1500 B.C.
After a two-hour journey, we will arrive at the amazing archaeological site of Tiwanaku, which was the capital of the civilization of the same name. The Tiwanaku Empire is thought to have been the first pre-Columbian empire in all of South America.
We will also take a fabulous guided tour of the Tiwanaku museum, where we will see some of the tools that were used and the amazing works of art that have been carefully restored.
Then, accompanied by the guide, we will visit the most important historical sites in Tiwanaku, including the Akapana pyramid, with a perfect cross shape, and the Kalasasaya temple, a ceremonial site that doubled as a calendar!
We will continue the tour visiting an underground temple packed with zoomorphic and anthropomorphic symbols, and the imposing Puerta del Sol (door to the sun), a symbol of Tiwanaku civilization. During the visit, we will learn about the historical context of this culture and the influence it would have on later ones such as the Incas.
Then we will return to La Paz and drop back at your hotel at around 1 pm.
Tiwanaku + chiripa culture tour
In the morning the tour follows the same itinerary as the half-day tour. Then, after visiting Tiwanaku we will have lunch at a local restaurant and in the afternoon we will enter the Taraco peninsula bordering Lake Titicaca in search of the roots of Chiripa culture.
We'll visit an underground temple and a museum dedicated to this culture unique to the Andes, a pioneer in the use of innovative agricultural techniques, which we will learn about during the tour. Finally, we will return to La Paz and drop you off at your hotels at around 4 pm.
Tiwanaku tour ending in Puno
We will follow the same route as the half-day tour, and after the visit to Tiwanaku have lunch at a local restaurant and head to Desaguadero, a city on the border between Bolivia and Peru. From here we will enter Peru and head to Puno, ending the tour at the hotel you have booked in Puno, around 4 pm.
