In this orangutan-watching activity in Gunung Leuser, we'll stay in wooden huts and discover how these primates live in their habitat. Plus, you can choose a 3 or 4-day tour.
3 or 4-day Orangutan Watching in Gunung Leuser
Day 1
First, we'll pick you up at Medan airport or at the hotel where you're staying to go to Gunung Leuser National Park, a nature reserve where a small village called Batu Rongring is located.
We'll arrive at lunchtime in Batu Rongring, and then visit the Sumatra Dream Class environmental conservation project to learn about their reforestation and recycling work.
Finally, we'll have dinner in a local house with typical food of the region and stay overnight in Batu Rongring.
Day 2
Rise and shine! We'll wake up early for a hearty breakfast and then set off on a trekking route through the Gunung Leuser jungle to see the orangutans in their natural habitat. With an expert guide, we'll learn how these primates live and interact with the environment and observe them from a safe distance.
We'll also take advantage of our visit and contribute to the reforestation of the jungle by planting trees and helping the environment. In the evening, we'll have dinner at a local family's house, where you'll taste typical Karonese food and discover what rural life in Sumatra is like.
Finally, we'll end the day resting in the huts.
Day 3
On the third day, we'll have breakfast and then continue to discover the wildlife of Gunung Leuser National Park. Afterwards, you'll have the rest of the day at your leisure.
To conclude the experience, we'll take you to Medan airport in time for your return flight, or to the hotel you've booked in the city.
4-Day Tour
If you want to spend an extra day enjoying this orangutan sighting experience in Gunung Leuser, you can choose the 4-day tour option.
On the 3-day tour, we'll only do 1 day of trekking, while on the 4-day tour, we'll spend 2 days trekking. Plus, on the 4-day tour, we'll camp in a tent inside the national park.
Accommodation and Meals
The tour includes 2 nights in wooden cabins on both tours, plus 1-night camping in the jungle for the 4-day tour.
At the time of booking, you can choose whether you prefer to have a private bathroom or a shared bathroom. Please note that breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included, but drinks are not included.
Please note that we'll be located in a remote area, so there will be no good phone signal or 4G. There will be no wifi either. We have electricity 3 hours a day after dark and until after dinner, which you can use to charge the batteries of your electronic devices.
Orangutan Sighting
The number of sightings will depend on various factors such as the weather at the time or the reproduction and breeding seasons of the different species.
Orangutans are only seen inside the National Park during guided trekking. Outside the park, you can see other animals such as macaque monkeys, Thomas monkeys, monitor lizards, and different species of birds. However, please note that we can't promise a sighting of orangutans or any other animal.
Important: to see orangutans, you'll need to enter the jungle and walk on wild paths, as there is no stipulated path. Please note that uphill and downhill walking is involved, so you'll need to have a minimum level of fitness to enjoy the tour.
