Enjoy an adventure-filled day at El Valle de Antón, nestled in the crater of an extinct volcano. You'll hike through the rainforest, visit a local market and see the golden poison frog's natural habitat.
Day Trip to El Valle de Antón
After picking you up from your hotel, we'll set out on a two-hour journey to El Valle de Antón.
Located in the crater of a huge extinct volcano, El Valle de Antón is 1969 feet (600 m) above sea level and the cool temperatures due to this altitude give way to a unique ecosystem unlike any other in Panama.
We'll start with a trekking route through El Valle de Antón, discovering the tropical scenery that surrounds the crater and enjoying the jungle and mountain views.
After our hike, we'll visit the Níspero Zoo where you'll discover the ecological wealth of the area. You'll also see the efforts made to protect the region's most famous species: the golden poison frog. This is a symbol of the country and is no longer found in the wild.
Next, we'll visit a market, where you'll rub shoulders with the locals that come here to buy and sell all sorts of products. On Sundays, the market offers handicraft demonstrations with typical pieces of local art.
You will then have two hours of free time to explore the town of El Valle de Antón, have lunch in a traditional restaurant (not included) or enjoy an extreme sport such as ziplining (not included).
At 2 pm we'll start to make our way back to Panama City, and we'll drop you back at your hotel at 4 pm.
Depending on which day you visit El Valle de Antón, the hiking route will be different:
- On Wednesdays, we'll go on a more advanced hiking route, which will take you to a height greater than 2953 feet (900 m) above sea level. From this height, you'll have incredible views of the valley while you hear about the legend of the Sleeping Indian.
- On Sundays, we'll walk through the tropical landscapes of El Valle de Antón until reaching the El Macho waterfalls and the pre-Colombian petroglyphs known as Piedra Pintada. Here, there are inscriptions carved in the rock that have still not been deciphered.
