Panama City Free Walking Tour Itinerary
The peal of the bells of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama can be heard throughout Plaza de la Independencia, marking the start of our free walking tour through the historic centre of Panama City. This area of the capital, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to an extraordinary legacy of colonial history, which you'll discover over the course of your route through its lively picturesque streets.
Make your first stop in front of the Cathedral Basilica of St Mary, as it is alternatively known, to admire the impressive details of its façade up close. Did you know that it dates back to the time of Spanish colonialism in Central America? Delve deeper into this period of history as you continue your free walking tour through Panama City Old Town, appreciating the architecture of the colonial-era buildings that line the streets.
You'll soon see how deeply-rooted the European influence is here as you visit the Iglesia de la Merced, a church dating back to the 17th century; Plaza Carlos V, or Charles V Square, and Plaza de Francia. From the latter, a square dedicated to the French workers and engineers who helped build the Panama Canal, you'll enjoy spectacular views over Panama Bay.
After exploring the most central streets of the beautiful colonial centre for two and a half hours, your free tour of Panama City will come to end.
