A museum since the 18th century, but a history dating back to the 12th century, the Louvre is the most important museum in France and one of the most visited in the world. 

Why visit the Louvre?

Visit the Louvre to see some of the world's most treasured art, including Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa and the Seated Scribe from Ancient Egypt. Enjoy its stunning architecture and gain an insight into its history.

History

In 1793, during the French Revolution, the Louvre was transformed into a public museum, which (it was hoped) would reflect the ideals of the Revolution and make art and culture accessible to the public.

Did you know...

It is impossible to see the entirety of the Louvre in just one day. If you were to spend 30 seconds on each piece of art, it would take 100 days to see everything! It is for this reason that we recommend visiting the Louvre with an expert guide, to see the highlights as well as some hidden gems!
