Mount Cook is New Zealand's highest mountain and one of the country's most photographed landmarks. Explore the stunning filming locations of the Lord of the Rings films on this day trip from Queenstown.
Mount Cook Day Trip Itinerary
From your hotel in Queenstown, you'll be taken deep into the beautiful wilderness of New Zealand's Southern Alps, where the mountains, glaciers and lakes make for unforgettable scenery. New Zealand is well known for its incredible natural beauty that remains relatively untouched by man. Are you ready to discover everything it has to offer?
The first stop on your full day excursion to Mount Cook will be the Kawarau River Gorge, a canyon located 33 miles (53 km) from Queenstown. You'll then continue deeper into New Zealand's South Island, reaching the town of Cromwell, famous its many stone fruit growing farms, giving it the nickname the "Fruit Bowl of the South".
After leaving Cromwell, you'll travel along the banks of Lake Dunstan towards Omarama. In this small township, you'll make a stop to enjoy a break and a delicious breakfast (not included). Well-rested, you'll set off again, this time heading to Lindis Pass and Lake Pukaki. Admire the idyllic landscapes of these two stunning spots, before moving on to the highlight of your day trip: Mount Cook, or Aoraki, the tallest peak in New Zealand.
Does this magical landscape remind you of anything? Probably, if you're a fan of the Lord of the Rings franchise! The mountain starred in the first film of the saga as the fictitious Mount Caradhras, part of the Misty Mountains that the characters journey across.
On reaching Mount Cook you'll have approximately four hours of free time to explore the magnificent mountainous scenery and take impressive photographs for memories you'll never forget. You'll also have the opportunity to enjoy a meal at the Hermitage Hotel (not included).
At the end of the day, you'll return to Queenstown and be dropped off at your hotel.
