Ravenna Guided Tour
Having met up at the scheduled time, we'll head to Ravenna, a city rich in the cultural and artistic heritage of the different civilizations which have inhabited it - the Romans, the Ostrogoths, and the Byzantines.
We'll stroll through the narrow streets of what was once the capital of the Roman Empire until we reach the Piazza del Popolo square. There you'll have time to admire all the beautiful buildings that surround it and learn about the history, art, and culture of this location.
Our tour then focuses on the places of Ravenna which have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. We'll visit the Archiepiscopal Museum, which has both national and international renown for the antiquities and rooms it houses, and collections. Inside, you'll also discover the mosaic masterwork of the chapel of Sant'Andrea, and the Throne of Archbishop Maximianus of Ravenna.
Our next stop is the Baptistery of Neon, one of the oldest monuments in Ravenna which has preserved its original structure and interior decoration just as it was many centuries ago. After stopping to admire the stunning dome, we'll walk to the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo to learn about the history of emperor Theodoric the Great.
We'll also enter the Basilica of San Vitale which is popular for the mosaics which cover its interior. You'll 'see the combined work of western and eastern artists in the murals. This a genuine treat for any lover of art.
Our last stop will be the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, constructed in the 5th century. The contrast between the simplicity of its exterior and the luxury of the interior, and the mosaics of the barrel vault, make this building one of the most important in Ravenna.
After 2.5 hours of history and beautiful buildings, we'll finish our guided tour.
Visiting the Monuments
Generally, we'll visit all 5 of the monuments listed in the description. However, if the reservation is made on short notice (especially on long weekends and holidays), it's likely that there are few times available or tickets may be sold out. In this case, the local tour company will get in touch with you to change the time of the visit or to do the tour without going to those monuments.
