On this guided tour, discover the extraordinary collection of paintings and sculptures housed in the Borghese Gallery, one of Rome's must-see art museums.
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at Piazzale del Museo Borghese, at the entrance to the gallery in the heart of Villa Borghese Park, one of Rome's most beloved green spaces. After a brief introduction to the park and its history, we'll head straight inside.
Housed in a stunning 17th-century villa, the Galleria Borghese is home to one of the best art collections in the world, and one of Rome's crown jewels. The collection was assembled by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a passionate and ruthless patron of the arts who had an eye for talent and the power to match. He was Bernini's earliest and most important patron, and the results speak for themselves.
The sculpture rooms are where the gallery truly takes your breath away. We'll stand in front of Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, one of the most astonishing works of marble ever carved, capturing the moment of transformation mid-movement with a lightness that seems physically impossible. We'll also see The Rape of Proserpina, where Pluto's fingers press into Proserpina's thigh in marble so lifelike it's hard to believe it isn't flesh, and Bernini's David, a Baroque powerhouse full of coiled energy. Antonio Canova's Venus Victorious rounds out the sculptural highlights, depicting Napoleon's sister Pauline Bonaparte as a reclining Venus with the cool confidence the subject clearly demanded.
The painting collection is equally extraordinary, with works by Caravaggio, Raphael, and Titian among the highlights.
After 2 hours of guided exploration, we'll wrap up at the gallery.
