A 10 for the staff. The computer system was down, and they were attentive to us until we were inside the basilica.

St. Peter's Basilica, the Heart of the Vatican City

St. Peter's Basilica is the epicenter of history, art, and faith in Rome. Built on the place where the apostle Saint Peter was buried, the current structure is the result of over a century of work from geniuses like Bramante, Michelangelo, and Bernini.

Its size is simply overwhelming: the basilica spans over 24,756 ft² (23,000 m²), with a length of 715 ft (218 m) and a height of 446 ft (136 m) at its highest point.

This architectural giant isn't just a place of worship; it's a vast museum that houses over 40 statues, 25 monuments, 24 altars, and 8 main chapels. In total, there are 80 different areas inside the basilica, with each one decorated with an unparalleled artistic richness.

The basilica is an essential monument for its spiritual value and for being the prime example of Renaissance and Baroque architecture in the world, making it a must-see to understand the Eternal City.

What to See in St. Peter's Basilica?

Once you step inside its halls, you'll be speechless by the size and intricate details. With this ticket, you can explore the main floor of the basilica, stopping at its most valuable treasures:

The Pietà by Michelangelo: located in the first chapel, it's one of the most moving sculptures in history, achieving a delicacy on the marble that brings it to life.
St. Peter's Baldachin by Bernini: this colossal bronze structure rises in the center of the basilica, over the high altar, whose salomonic columns point to the exact place where the tomb of St. Peter lies.
The Dome (seen from inside): you can admire the immense dome designed by Michelangelo from the base, whose mosaic and dimensions dominate the entire sacred space.
Statue of Saint Peter: you'll see the famous bronze figure whose right foot has been worn smooth by the kisses of millions of pilgrims over the centuries.
