On this excursion from Campeche we'll discover the fascinating Mayan culture by visiting Calakmul and Balamkú, two important archaeological sites on the Yucatán Peninsula.
We'll pick you up at 5 am at your hotel in San Francisco de Campeche, and from there we'll enter the Yucatan Peninsula to visit two important archaeological sites of the Mayan period. The first stop will be Calakmul, located four and a half hours away.
Before arriving at our destination, we'll stop halfway for a hearty breakfast. The menu includes two sandwiches, juice, yoghurt and fruit. After recharging our batteries, we'll continue on to the first archaeological site on the route: Calakmul, which in the pre-Columbian period was an important Mayan political centre.
As soon as we arrive at this site, which has been declared a World Heritage Site, we'll take a guided tour of the ruins of Calakmul, where we'll see several tiered temples, known as Structure I and II. We'll also see the remains of an ancient ball game court, one of the most popular sports among the Mayas.
We'll then leave behind the remains of Calakmul and follow the route through the Yucatan to the Mayan site of Balamkú. The most surprising thing about this ancient pre-Columbian settlement is its decoration. As we'll see, many of the temples are ornamented with striking stucco friezes whose lithographic engravings are true masterpieces.
After visiting the archaeological site, we'll head to the Puerta Calakmul restaurant for a delicious lunch. The menu includes a traditional Mexican dish, with a choice between a portion of chicken prepared in the style of the region or fajitas.
After lunch we will finally return to your hotel in Campeche, where we will arrive at 8 pm.
