Cerro Verde Volcano and Mayan Ruins Trip
We will pick you up from your accommodation in San Salvador, before departing on a one-hour drive. We will arrive at the Los Volcanes National Park, which is a large area of volcanoes and lakes.
Upon arriving, we will set off on a wonderful 45-minute hike towards the magnificent Cerro Verde Volcano, located at an altitude of 6,600 feet. We will follow the ecological trails and you will have the opportunity to admire the Santa Ana Volcano and the Izalco Volcano, nicknamed the 'Lighthouse of the Pacific'.
We stroll through a beautiful cloud forest before we reach the crater near the summit of Cerro Verde Volcano. Surrounded by typical plant species of the area, such as the Giant Agave, we will admire this spectacular natural jewel. We will enjoy views of the volcanic lake of Coatepeque, one of the most beautiful in the world.
In the afternoon, we will trek through the Salvadoran landscape to the amazing archaeological site of Joya de Cerén. Known as the "Pompeii of America", there you will discover a pre-Columbian Mayan agricultural village. As we explore the streets, you will learn all about why the structures are so well preserved.
Then we leave Joya de Cerén behind and head to the archeological site of San Andrés, where we continue learning about the Mayan people. In what used to be one of the ceremonial and political centers of civilization, we will explore various structures used by the rulers. We will even see the remains of an indigo mill which was buried by the eruption of El Playón in 1658.
Then we hit the road again and head back to San Salvador, where our fantastic adventure ends.
