Santiago de Chile Markets: Free Walking Tour Itinerary
Meet your guide in front of the Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts, near the Parque Forestal, an urban park located in Santiago's historic centre. Throughout your free walking tour, you'll discover the spirit of the capital from a new perspective, immersing yourself in the authentic daily life of locals exploring the city's most famous markets.
Make your way first to the famous Mercado Central, or Central Market. As you admire its beautiful façade, your English-speaking guide will reveal fascinating facts about its history and the importance it has held in the lives of Santiago's residents. Inside, stroll through the hustle and bustle of shoppers and vendors, discovering the many different stalls selling fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, meat... all of incredible quality and at the best prices!
Next on your free walking tour will be Mercado La Vega, a favourite spot for Santiago locals. The sounds, sights, smells and tastes of the city find their perfect blend here, and you'll be immersed instantly in the true rhythm of Chilean life in this popular market.
Continue on your route through the Patronato Neighbourhood, a district where the majority of Santiago de Chile's Asian and Middle Eastern population have traditionally resided. The great fusion of cultures is reflected in the lively atmosphere here. From Patronato, you'll hop on the metro (ticket not included) and head to the city's General Cemetery. One of the largest in Latin America, this sprawling cemetery is set in a beautiful park where sculptures and luscious trees are placed amidst ornate presidential mausoleums and elegant memorials.
Your tour will come to an end at the exit of the cemetery, where your guide will give you hints and tips for the best places to go to continue exploring Santiago de Chile at your own pace.
