Discover the fascinating history and artwork of Stockholm's New Town on this free walking tour of the Swedish capital's contemporary district.

Tour Details

After meeting your English-speaking guide at the designated time in Gustavo Adolfo Torg, the roundabout in front of the Royal Swedish Opera, your free walking tour of Stockholm New Town will begin. We'll start by learning about the history of the Vasa royal family and their influence on 17th-century Stockholm.

Once we've set the scene, we'll walk to the Kungsträdgården, passing by iconic buildings such as the Grand Hôtel, the Royal Palace, and the National Museum. We'll stroll through the park while discussing Sweden's history, from the empire to its fall at the hands of the Russians.

Next, we'll head to the Synagogue, where we'll pause and talk about religion and the fascinating story of Raoul Wallenberg. Our next stop will be Nybroplan, the modern area of the city. We'll discover how the Östermalm district came to be, as well as see Djurgarden Island from afar. Afterwards, we'll walk to Normalmstorg Square, where we'll tell you where the phrase 'Stockholm Syndrome' comes from.

As we pass through Biblioteksgatan Street, we'll reach Humlegarden Park. Here, we'll see the Royal Library and the statue of Linnaeus, the father of taxonomy. In front of the statue, we'll talk about Sweden's impressive and numerous contributions to science.

We'll then cross the city through the Kungstornets Tower Tunnel, which marks the beginning of the business district. These were the first skyscrapers in Europe! Our tour will end at Hotorget, where the famous Hay Market and its colorful open-air stalls are located. After admiring the grand façade of the Stockholm Concert Hall, which hosts the Nobel Prize ceremony, we'll bid farewell after a total of 2.5 hours.

Groups

We're unable to accept reservations for this tour for groups of more than 6 people. If you're traveling in a larger group, we recommend checking out this private tour of Stockholm.
