Silk Tour of Valencia
Our Silk Tour begins at the Tourist Information Office of Valencia, located in the historical heart of the city on the banks of the river Turia. From here we head to Market Square for a guided visit of the Silk Exchange. This magnificent 15th-century building was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its late Gothic-style architecture.
Inside, you will learn all about what was the city's most important industry from the Renaissance until the 18th-century. You will see the majestic vaults and the elegant tower. We will also encounter the adjoining Consulate of the Sea building and the Trading Hall, popularly known as the 'Hall of Columns'. Here you will learn all about the city's ancient money exchange which played a central role in the city's business.
Our next stop is the Museum and College of High Silk Art, home to the fascinating Silk Museum. Here, you witness the impressive optical illusion created by the intricate tiled decoration. Inside you learn even more fabulous secrets of the city's beautiful silk.
Our route continues in the ancient neighborhood of Gremio de Velluter, which today is called El Pilar. This was traditionally where velvet weavers lived and worked during the middle ages. Then we head to Quevado Street, where you will discover Albaes, a famous store which sells traditional Valencian clothing. Here, you will enjoy a fantastic display of the different fabrics, weaves, and costumes of the region.
