Discover the history and landscapes of southern Peru on the famous Ruta del Sol from Cusco to Puno- an unforgettable journey through the Andes!
Ruta del Sol from Cusco to Puno
We'll set off on the Ruta del Sol at 6:50 am from number 499 Avenida Alameda Pachacutec in Cusco (although you must arrive 20 minutes beforehand to check in). An hour later we'll be arriving in Andahuaylillas, a beautiful Andean village, where we'll visit the San Pedro Apóstol church. Did you know this it is said to be "America's Sistine Chapel"? Inside we'll admire outstanding works of sacred art, an exquisite combination of Renaissance and Baroque.
From Andahuaylillas we'll continue on the Ruta del Sol towards the Raqchi archaeological site, where the remains of the ancient temple of the God Wiracocha are still conserved. How was this Andean deity worshipped? What legacy remains of this sacred cult? What happened to the devotees to this god after the arrival of the Spaniards? You'll find out the answers to all these questions on the guided tour around the archaeological site.
The next stop will be in the village of Sicuani, where we'll stop for an hour and fuel up with a buffet lunch. Then we'll head to Abra La Raya: a magnificent mountain pass that is over 4300 metres high. After enjoying breathtaking views in this amazing place we'll move on to the fascinating Lithic Museum of Pukara (entrance fee not included). Its permanent collection includes a wide range of monoliths and other stone sculptures, with long histories packed with interesting facts.
The Ruta del Sol will end at the bus station in Puno, where we'll arrive by 5 pm.
