Ruta del Sol from Puno to Cusco
It is said that at least once in a lifetime you have to go on the famous Ruta del Sol across southern Peru. It is also said that everyone who goes on this incredible journey ends up captivated by the history, landscapes and gastronomy of the Andes. To find out for ourselves, we'll meet at 6:20 am at the Puno Bus Station, departing towards the town of Pukara at 6:50, located only one hour away.
We'll discover the legacy of the ancient Andean settlers visiting the Lithic Museum of Pukara (entrance fee not included). Monoliths and other strange stone sculptures are exhibited at the museum, where we'll gain a better understanding of the history of this area of Peru. From Pukara we'll continue the Ruta del Sol towards the La Raya pass, where we'll make a 10-minute stop to photograph this breathtaking mountain pass that is over 4300 metres high.
Having taken all the photos we need in La Raya, we'll head to a restaurant in the town of Sicuani to recharge our batteries with a buffet lunch. Afterwards, we'll visit the well-known archaeological site of Raqchi, where we'll see the remains of the ancient temple of the God Wiracocha, a deity who was worshipped in pre-Hispanic times and whose name is surrounded by legends and mysteries.
Then we'll make our way up to the village of Andahuaylillas, where we'll visit the San Pedro Apóstol church: the "Sistine Chapel of America". Not convinced? Wait until you see the inside of this magnificent temple for yourself!
We'll finish the Ruta del Sol at 499 Alameda Pachacutec Avenue in Cusco. We'll arrive at this legendary Peruvian city by 5 pm.
