Description
The tour meets on the Royal Mile, just outside St. Giles' Cathedral, from which we'll walk to Edinburgh Castle, perched on top of an extinct volcano. As you can imagine, the views of the city center from this point are incredible!
After telling all about the castle, and handing out your tickets, we'll start exploring its main buildings, the 3 museums of the citadel, and the war prisons.
Climbing to the top of the castle, we'll see the oldest building in Edinburgh, St. Margaret's Chapel, dating all the way back to the year 1130. Then, in Crown Square, the castle's main courtyard, we can see the Great Hall and its spectacular collection of arms and armor, the Scottish National War Memorial as well as the Royal Palace. Fun fact: James Stuart, son of Mary Stuart, was born in one of these royal rooms!
In the palace, you can also see the vault holding the Scottish crown jewels, called the Honours of Scotland, as well as the Stone of Destiny, on which kings were crowned during the Middle Ages.
After an hour and a half, we'll conclude this fascinating guided tour in the vicinity of the castle.
