Płaszów Concentration Camp Tour

Discover the symbolism and the emotion of the Płaszów concentration camp, witness to one of the darkest moments in history: the Holocaust. It was also the setting for some of the scenes in Schindler's list.

Płaszów Concentration Camp Tour

Płaszów can be found not far from the centre of Krakow; a work camp created by the Nazis which was turned into a camp dealing in genocide during the Second World War.

The tour meets in the centre of Krakow to take the bus (not included) to Płaszów. Once we're in what remains of the camp we'll remember the tragic events which took place from 1944 onwards, when Płaszów began to receive thousands of Jews from the Krakow ghetto. From this moment onwards, mass executions, forced labour and constant humiliation were a day to day occurrence for these people.

We'll tour the remains of the bunkhouses in the camp, as well as the watchtowers, and take a quiet moment in front of the Płaszów Commemorative Monument. With the war over, the new communist government forgot about this concentration camp and allowed construction around it, resulting in a sharp contrast between residential areas and the ruined camp.

The symbolism of this camp was what led Spielberg to shoot some of the scenes in his Oscar-winning film Schindler's List. And Płaszów has a long relationship with the man the movie was based on: the atrocities committed in this camp were those which drove the German businessman to save his Jewish employees.
