Do you plan to visit Mexico City in Autumn? If you're here on the 1st of November, don't miss one of its greatest traditions: the Day of the Dead. Do you dare to listen to the grisliest of the Aztec stories?
The Day of the Dead in Mexico City is a unique experience. On this night tour you'll enjoy one of the most popular holidays of the year for Mexicans, visiting a pantheon by candlelight and cruising along the canals of Xochimilco on the famous trajinera boats.
Having picked you up from the centre of the city, we take you on a most special adventure. We first head to a pantheon full of candles, where the tour will pass through tombs and altars, all garlanded with cempasúchil branches, better known as the 20 petalled flower and which has a sad love story behind it. And don't be perturbed, as between the gravestones you will also see earthenware pots full of traditional food, and decorative sugar skulls, in honour of family members residing in the beyond...
To continue we'll take a cruise along the Xochimilco canals in a traditional trajinera boat, a kind of gondola common in the region, where we will tour the famous floating gardens or ‘chinampas’. There, your guide will speak to you about Mexican legends, such as that of Llorona, whose spirit is said to inhabit these waters... perhaps we will be able to hear her spine-chilling cries...
Having learnt all about the Day of the Dead, we'll return to the start point.
