Don't miss this unforgettable two day trip to the temples of Angkor. Discover the ancient city's most iconic sights as well as the other jewels of Khmer art, including Angkor Thom and Banteay Srei.
After being picked up from your hotel, you'll begin your tour of the iconic Angkor Wat, the most important temple in Cambodia and the only one to have remained active as a place of worship since its foundation in the 12th century. Stroll through the complex's majestic avenues as you admire the largest religious monument in the world.
Discover the history of the Angkor complex, built under the Khmer Empire, and learn fascinating facts about it, including the importance of elephants in its construction. You'll make a stop in a local restaurant where you'll enjoy a delicious typical lunch.
With recharged batteries, you'll head towards the archaeological area of Angkor Thom, the ancient city from which the last Khmer kings ruled, before the country was taken over by the Siamese in the 15th century. Here, explore the Baphuon Temple, a Buddhist sanctuary which was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, and try and interpret the bas-reliefs of Bayon Temple.
You'll then head back to Angkor Wat, where you can experience incredible views of a spectacular sunset (unless you'd prefer not to wait), before being taken back to Siem Reap.
Finally, you'll return to your hotel in Siem Reap, where you can rest in preparation for the second day of your excursion.
After being picked up from your hotel, you'll be taken to the Pre Rup Temple. Built in the 10th century and presumed to be a site dedicated to funeral rites, it is considered the only remaining purely Hindu temple in Angkor, the rest having been transformed to Buddhist places of worship in the 12th century.
Next, you'll head to Banteay Srei, which translates as the Citadel of Women. The temple was built from red sandstone, which lent itself to the easy carving of intricately detailed reliefs that are still visible to this day. As you stroll between its walls, admire the mythological scenes engraved into the lintels and columns.
After exploring these two historic temples, enjoy lunch in a local restaurant, close to the Banteay Srei Temple.
In the afternoon, you'll explore Ta Promh, an ancient Buddhist monastery which has been completely taken over by the jungle. Admire this beautiful fusion of crumbling Khmer architecture with tropical trees.
From here, you'll make your way to Chong Kneas. After around a 30 minute walk to the dock, you'll climb aboard a private boat (not included) for an incredible experience of the floating village.
Returning back to land, if there's time, you can visit the Angkor Artisans centre to buy some handmade local souvenirs.
You'll be taken back to your hotel in Siem Reap around 5:30 pm.
