Are you looking to take an unforgettable trip to Ancient Greece? By booking these tickets to the Temple of Poseidon, you can visit the ruins at Cape Sounion, the place where, according to Greek mythology, the Aegean Sea was born.
Once you arrive at Cape Sounion at the date and time you have booked, you can begin your visit at your own pace, accompanied by the audioguide, which you can download onto your phone.
The first major highlight of your tour will be entering the grounds of the Temple of Poseidon, one of the great masterpieces of the Golden Age of Pericles, built in 444 BC. As you walk alongside its slender white marble Doric columns, rising from the cliffs of Cape Sounion to a height of almost 60 m (196 ft) above the sea, you’ll hear the legends and myths about the immense power of the god of the oceans.
Through the stories told here, you’ll discover why this temple was a beacon of hope for Athenian sailors. Did you know that it was the last sight of their homeland as they set sail, and the first upon their return home? You can even try to spot the signature that the famous Romantic poet Lord Byron carved into one of its stones in the early 19th century.
As you make your way through the archaeological site, your walk will also take you to the Sanctuary of Athena Sunias. You’ll come to understand the enormous religious, military, and strategic importance this site held for the defence and splendour of the city of Athens. You won’t miss a single detail of its rich cultural heritage!
What’s more, throughout the tour, you’ll be free to stop whenever you like to enjoy the panoramic views of the Attica coastline and the endless blue of the Aegean Sea, undoubtedly the perfect spot to watch one of the most beautiful sunsets in Greece.
Once you’ve made your booking, we’ll send you an email with clear instructions on how to access and download the audioguide onto your phone before you arrive. All you’ll need to do is bring your own headphones and make sure your mobile is fully charged to enjoy the audio guides.
The Temple of Poseidon site opens at 9:30 am and remains open until sunset. The last admission is 20 minutes before sunset.
