Machu Picchu Hike: Two Day Inca Trail Itinerary
Day 1 - Inca Trail
On the first day of your tour, you'll be picked up from your hotel in Cusco first thing in the morning and taken to the train station, where you'll catch the Backpacker train to Kilometre 104, one of the most famous spots to start hiking the Inca Trail.
Begin your trek along the peaks of the Andes mountains. Throughout the four-hour hiking route you'll be completely enchanted by the stunning landscapes surrounding you. Reaching the ruins of Chachabamba, you'll start the climb up to Wiñay Wayna, one of the most important archaeological complexes on the Inca Trail.
Surrounded by unparalleled views of historic ruins and beautiful nature, you'll enjoy a well-deserved rest and a delicious meal. After eating you'll embark on a guided tour of Wiñay Wayna, which is home to well-preserved houses, fountains and agricultural terraces.
You'll continue on to Inti Punku, also known as The Sun Gate, where you'll catch your first magical glimpse of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, perched majestically upon a mountain top and surrounded by dramatic Andean landscapes.
After another two hours of hiking, you'll arrive in Aguas Calientes, the town located at the base of Machu Picchu, where you'll have dinner and spend the night after a long day of adventure.
Day 2 - Machu Picchu
Your second day will see you up early for breakfast, before catching the bus up to Machu Picchu - a welcome rest for your legs after your Inca Trail hike!
Having reached the peak of the mountain, you'll enjoy a guided tour of the incredible archaeological complex, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Discover the Inca citadel's main square, the houses, temples, mausoleums, the palace, the astronomical clock and much more, as your guide reveals key facts about their history and the myths surrounding them.
Following your visit of Machu Picchu, you'll catch the bus back to Aguas Calientes, where you'll have free time to eat, enjoy the thermal baths for which the town is named, or simply to relax.
In the afternoon, you'll make the return journey to Cusco on either the Expedition or Vistadome train, both of which have enormous windows and glass ceilings allowing you one last unforgettable panoramic view of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. You'll be dropped back off at your hotel in Cusco at around 8:30 pm.
Access to Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail is limited to preserve the route and remains of the citadel. Make sure to book your tour as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment.
