Discover the delights of the South Valley of Cusco: explore the fascinating archaeological sites of Tipón and Pikillaqta and visit the traditional village of Andahuaylillas, home to the so-called Sistine Chapel of the Americas.
Cusco South Valley Tour: Tipón, Pikillaqta & Andahuaylillas
Having been picked up from your hotel, you'll leave the historic centre of Cusco behind and head into the South Valley, home to incredible archaeological sites and beautiful landscapes off the beaten tourist track.
Driving through the spectacular mountainous scenery of Peru's Quispicanchi Province, you'll reach Tipón, an enormous 15th century Inca archaeological complex. Spread over almost 600 acres (239 hectares), the site is made up of an impressive network of agricultural terraces, water channels and an irrigation canal fed by a natural spring. Its original purpose has been lost in centuries of history, but it remains an important example of Incan agricultural engineering.
Your tour will continue onwards to Pikillaqta, an archaeological site that pre-dates the Incas, having been constructed by the Wari culture who inhabited the area between the 6th and 11th centuries. The historic village is thought to have been used for ceremonies and feasts until it was abandoned around 1100.
After exploring Pikillaqta, you'll head to the final stop of your tour of Cusco's South Valley: Andahuaylillas. Wander through the streets of this small and peaceful village, admiring the traditional architecture of its houses before reaching the local church, known as the Sistine Chapel of the Americas. It may be simple outside, but the interiors of St Peter's Church are richly decorated with murals, frescos and sculptures, earning its nickname.
At the end of your fascinating tour, you'll make the return journey to Cusco, where you'll be dropped off in Avenida El Sol, next to the Mercado Artesanal in the historic centre.
You'll be picked up from your hotel between 15 and 30 minutes before the start of the tour.
