In this activity, we'll dip our feet into the sea, and you'll be able to observe the fascinating lemon sharks of Sal Island from up close! Don't worry... these friendly yellow-skinned sharks are harmless to humans.
Activity Details
We'll pick you up at your hotel in Santa Maria at the designated time to go to Shark Bay, a bay famous for its habitat for lemon sharks.
But why are they called lemon sharks? Believe it or not, they got their name from the effect of the light on the water that can sometimes cause these sharks to have a yellowish appearance, similar to the color of the skin of a lemon.
The average size of these sharks is between 8 feet and 9 feet (0.5 and 3 meters) long, and they are totally harmless to humans. In this activity, you'll get the chance to dip your feet in the shallow waters where the baby lemon sharks gather. The big ones will be a bit farther away, but we'll get to observe them from a fairly close distance as well. We'll also take some time to learn some interesting facts about this species of shark.
Even though they are a safe species, if you'd rather, you can watch the sharks from the shoreline while you take some time to relax and sunbathe on the sands of Shark Bay.
After this experience with the lemon sharks on the island of Sal, we'll return to Santa Maria to take you to your hotel, where arrival is scheduled for 2 hours after pickup.
