Guided Tour of Nowa Huta

Head to the city centre and greet your guide and the rest of the tour between St. Florian’s Gate and the Barbican. From here, set off to the closest tram station and relax as the tram trundles to Nowa Huta.

This district, located 10 kilometres east of the city centre of Krakow, is a socialist-realist model city built after World War II. It was designed to demonstrate the benefits of Communism to the Polish population.

First, we'll visit one of the old bunkers. In this anti-aircraft refuge, we'll learn some unusual facts about the communist era, as well as visiting a command centre from the 1950s where time truly seems to have stood still.

Then we'll continue to visit the Central Square and Roses Avenue, the centre of Nowa Huta. Here you can see the utopian ideal built by the communist regime, with five large avenues leaving from the central square in the form of a star. It was here that the statue of Lenin was located.

The route will The Lord's Ark, which became a symbol of resistance for catholic workers against the communist regime. In a world where nuclear war was a constant fear, many Polish workers began to organise themselves. From their union came the Solidarity Syndicate, which as we will see, was one of the main social movements of the time.

With the tour of Nowa Huta over, we'll take the tram back to Krakow, where we'll arrive around 2:30 pm.
