Rome Combo: Vatican City & Colosseum

8,733 reviews | 72,304 travellers
Very interesting visits, with guides who are very knowledgeable about the places visited and the art that exists in them, as well as friendly ones. Good organization, meeting the schedules and with quick entrances to the visits. The joint activity, morning and afternoon, physically demanding due to standing for many hours. It is advisable to visit San Pedro before the start of the visit to the Vatican museums since the time at noon before the visit to the Colosseum is scarce if you try to fit in there

Morning, Vatican

Follow the knowledgeable guide on a captivating tour around Vatican City and discover three of its most unique treasures:

  • Vatican Museums
  • Sistine Chapel
  • St Peter's Basilica

And as well as the historical explanation, your guide will tell stories of betrayal and even lust! If you wish you can climb up to St Peter's Dome during the hour and a half of free time.

The dress code to enter St Peter’s Basilica is quite strict. Men and women must have their shoulders and knees covered. It is preferable for men to wear long trousers.

Afternoon, Ancient Rome

After visiting Vatican City, you’ll have time to eat at your own leisure and then meet your guide in the afternoon to continue the visit. The afternoon tour's itinerary is the same as the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine guided tour. You'll visit the following landmarks:

  • Colosseum
  • Roman Forum
  • Palatine Hill

Itinerary Changes

To guarantee safety regarding Covid-19, access to St. Peter's Basilica from the Sistine Chapel is temporarily closed, therefore we will not visit the Basilica during the tour. Entrance, however, is free, and you can access it from St. Peter's Square.

Important information

Please note that St Peter’s Basilica and/or the Sistine Chapel can close without prior notice. If this should happen on the day of your visit, you will have more time to explore other parts included in the guided tour. During Easter week St. Peter's Basilica may close for important ceremonies.

Optional Transport

  • Without pickup: you should make your own way to the meeting point both in the morning and afternoon. We recommend taking the metro to the Vatican (line A - Ottaviano) and to the Colosseum (Line B - Colosseo)
  • With pickup and transfer: this tour includes pickup at your hotel an hour before the start time, and transfer from the Vatican to the Colosseum, with time to eat in between. Pickup takes place 1 hour before the tour is due to begin. This service is available for all accommodation within an 8 km radius of the meeting point. The tour ends at the Colosseum and does not include return transport to your hotel.

Frequently asked questions

  • Q - How long is the rest time between tours?

A - Rest depends on thetime of year, in summer it's normally 3 hours and in the winter an hour and a half. The exact time of the colosseum tour will be confirmed on the day of the tour.

  • Q - Does the tour include transfer between the Vatican and the Colosseum?

A - This tour is the sum of two tours at a reduced price. Transportation from one point to the other must be done on your own, unless you choose the option with pickup and transfer.

  • Q - If we choose the option without transfers, how do we get from the Vatican to the Colosseum?

A - There are several routes from the Vatican to the Colosseum. Bus number 40 is at the end of Via della Conciliazione (near Castel Sant'Angelo). It runs frequently, is fast and will drop you off in Piazza Venezia. From there, you can walk through the forums (about 10 minutes) or you can take bus 85 to the Colosseum. Another option, although a bit longer, is to take bus number 81 from Piazza Risorgimento to Via dei Fori Imperiali. Although we do not recommend it as it is a longer route with slightly more complicated connections, you can also take the Metro A from the Ottaviano stop to Termini, where you will have to change to line B, which will take you to the Colosseum stop. If you prefer, you can pay for a cab to take you directly to the Colosseum (about 10 euros).

  • Q - Are backpacks allowed?

A - Only small backpacks are allowed in the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum. Large backpacks or long umbrellas should be left at the cloakrooms of these monuments.

  • Q - Is pickup available at apartments?

A - Yes, as long as they are within a radius of 8 kilometers from the Vatican.

  • Q - Is this activity accessible to people with a minor disability?

A - This tour should not be a problem for someone with a minor disability. However, it should be noted that in the Colosseum, the paths are made of stone, so the client may have difficulty keeping up with the pace of the guide.

  • Q - Is there a cloakroom at the Vatican?

A - A concierge service is available at the Vatican Museums. Once the visit is over, you will have to return to the Vatican Museums to pickup your belongings.

  • Q - Is it possible to access the Vatican Museums with pushchairs/strollers?

A - No, access to the Vatican Museums with pushchairs/strollers is not allowed. They can be left in the museum's cloakroom before entering the museum.

  • Q - How to book?

A - To reserve the activity, choose the date and complete the form on this page. You will receive your confirmation immediately.
