Tour Highlights
After being picked up at the meeting point in southern Tenerife, we'll embark on a fascinating journey that begins with a visit to the banana plantation of Las Margaritas, where you'll delve into the cultivation of the island's prized fruit.
We'll explore the plantation, discovering how banana harvesting has been preserved since ancestral times and learning about the different uses of this beloved fruit, such as in gofio or molasses. After seeing the banana plantation, we'll enjoy a tasting of these products. Delicious!
Our next stop will be, depending on the season and availability, one of the following wineries in southern Tenerife: Cumbres de Abona or Mencey de Chasna. In its facilities, you'll uncover the secrets of the production process of the island's wines. You'll then engage in a Canarian wine tasting, allowing your senses to discern the unique aromas and nuances of these exceptional wines.
We'll continue the tour by heading to the outskirts, to the charming village of Vilaflor, where Bodegas Reverón awaits. Here, the winery's crew will show you the secrets of their wines with a guided tour. We'll enjoy another wine tasting, along with a traditional Canarian lunch, featuring local specialties like almogrote, a unique cheese and pepper pâté exclusive to the archipelago.
After eating, we'll return to the starting point, where we'll conclude this 4.5-hour tour.
History of Wine in the Canary Islands
In the 14th century, the Canary Islands welcomed the introduction of European vines, courtesy of missionaries predating Spanish colonization. By the mid-16th century, winemaking had burgeoned into a pivotal industry, with British merchants facilitating the export of the renowned sweet Malvasia wine to both Europe and America. Despite enduring challenges such as wars and volcanic disruptions, the Canary Islands sustained their wine trade for an impressive 300-year span.
The narrative took a notable turn in the 1860s with the emergence of the phylloxera vine aphid, which wreaked havoc on European vineyards. A remarkable exception, the Canary Islands remained untouched, safeguarding some of the planet's oldest grapevine varieties.
In the contemporary landscape, particularly in Tenerife, the Islands have garnered acclaim for producing exceptional wines. The absence of grafting, complemented by volcanic soil and diverse microclimates, lends a distinctive quality to wines ranging from crisp whites to robust reds. Across the varied topography of Tenerife, encompassing coastal regions to mountain slopes boasting some of Europe's highest vineyards, the Islands' winemaking legacy persists.
