León Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the appointed time, we'll pick you up at your hotel, and from there, we'll start this tour of Leon, one of the most beautiful colonial cities of Nicaragua. Let's get started!
First, we'll arrive at the church of La Recolección, one of the most important baroque temples in Central America. There we'll admire its elegantly decorated mustard-colored facade.
A few blocks away, we'll find the Paraninfo de la UNAN-León, which is part of the campus of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, the oldest in the country. This building, with its tall wooden windows, houses an extensive history of struggle; did you know that some of the most influential student movements of the 20th century were born here?
We'll continue to the Ortiz Guardián Foundation Art Museum, located in a group of interconnected colonial mansions. We'll enter this space, where we'll be greeted by its volcanic stone floors and high ceilings with wooden beams.
For 30 minutes, we'll walk through each room and see works by artists like Picasso, Chagall, and Miró, along with prominent local names of national art such as Armando Morales. We'll learn all about his unique style on our tour!
Finally, we'll arrive at the spiritual heart of León: the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, declared a World Heritage Site. It is the largest cathedral in Central America. Its facade merges the austere baroque and neoclassical. Here, we'll immerse ourselves in its splendor, admiring its five naves of thick stone walls and golden altars.
Inside, we'll visit one of the most revered tombs in Nicaragua: that of the poet Rubén Darío, father of literary modernism. His tomb, guarded by a marble lion, stands as a true symbol for the locals. In addition, weather permitting, we will climb its impressive terraces. The views will steal your heart!
Finally, after a 2.5-hour tour, we'll say goodbye and drop you off at your hotel.
