Salvador de Bahía Center & Churches Free Tour
Tour Details
We’ll meet in front of the Santo Antônio Além do Carmo Parish Church, where we’ll begin our route through the religious history of Salvador de Bahía.
We’ll head to the Santo Antônio Bandstand, a place once used for musical performances, public speeches, and neighborhood gatherings in the city center. Did you know bandstands were symbols of urban modernity in Brazil, inspired by European models?
Next, we’ll explore the complex of small churches in Santo Antônio, where we’ll understand how religion shaped not only faith, but also power and social organization.
Nearby, the churches of Boqueirão and the Third Order of Santo Antônio will reveal another side of devotion: that of lay brotherhoods and local communities. Who was allowed to enter these temples, and who was left out? We’ll tell you all about it.
We’ll continue to the Church of the Blessed Sacrament on Passo Street, famous for its monumental staircase, a traditional setting for processions. From there, the tour will take us to Casa do Benin, where we’ll talk outside about the deep connections between Salvador de Bahía and Africa.
Next, we’ll walk down Ladeira do Pelourinho, reading in its urban contrasts centuries of inequality, resistance, and transformation. We’ll arrive at Terreiro de Jesus, a square that brings together churches, former educational institutions, and political power.
Finally, we’ll return to the original meeting point, where we’ll say our goodbyes after 2.5 hours exploring Salvador on this free tour.
