Elvas Guided Tour
Tour Details
To start our guided tour of Elvas, we'll meet at the Praça da República, in the heart of the city. Ready? Let's go!
First, we'll see Elvas' 12th-century wall, built when the bordering city was a strategic site of Al-Andalus.
Afterward, we'll head toward the Alcazaba and the Castle, located at the higher part of the walls. Did you know its origins date back to the 9th century? From here, the city landscape opens to the bastioned system, a masterpiece of military engineering declared a World Heritage Site.
Plus, we'll see the Amoreira Aqueduct, with over 800 arches and 4.97 mi (8 km) long. Then, we'll lose ourselves in the streets of Elvas until we reach the Igreja das Domínicas and the Old Cathedral of Elvas, two prime examples of the spiritual and artistic power that emerged in the 16th century, a period of Portuguese discoveries.
Close by, we'll pass by the Pelourinho, a symbol of municipal autonomy, and the former synagogue, a testament to the Jewish presence that deeply marked the financial and cultural life of the city.
Our tour will end by returning to the starting point after 2 hours.
