Gambia Traditional Markets Day Trip
Day Trip Details
At the indicated time, we’ll pick you up from your hotel and begin a day trip that will introduce you to Gambia’s most traditional markets. It’s an essential experience for understanding the country’s culture and history.
Our first stop will be Serrekunda, a lively town that perfectly reflects the everyday hustle so characteristic of Gambian life. Once there, we’ll stroll through its streets, lined with shops that showcase the town’s oldest traditions through colors, sounds, and scents.
Next, we’ll step inside Serrekunda’s traditional market, full of stalls where merchants and artisans work together to offer the community the best local products. You’ll see endless stands bursting with color, aromas, and energy.
We’ll then continue to a batik studio, where you’ll learn how these vibrant African textiles are made. You’ll see the different wax-resist dyeing techniques used to create patterns by applying layers of wax to the areas that should remain uncolored. The results will leave you amazed.
After discovering the full process behind these iconic fabrics, we’ll return to Banjul to visit the famous Albert Market. Before heading inside, you’ll have 30 minutes of free time to grab a bite at a nearby spot. Then, we’ll explore this historic colonial-era market, where you’ll find everything from clothes, spices, and food to artisan crafts and endless souvenirs we’re sure you’ll want to take home. You’ll also have free time to wander the stalls and try some of Gambia’s local specialties.
Finally, we’ll head to Arch 22, a monument in Banjul that commemorates the 1994 coup d’état. If you wish, we will go up to the museum so you can learn about this pivotal moment in the country’s history.
After six hours of exploring, we’ll take you back to your hotel, marking the end of the day trip.
